USPS Rate Changes

Proposed USPS Rate Change 2011

PROPOSED CHANGE EFFECTIVE JANUARY 2ND, 2011

Prices will change for all mailing services, including First Class stamps. The Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act states that the Post Office may increase their rates several times a year, in accordance with the CPI, and they are only required to give a 90 day advance notice. (We summarized this Act on the 2008 Rate Change page or you can click on the Act to read it in its original context.)

What are the changes? On January 2nd, 2011, the price for a 1-ounce First-Class Mail stamp will increase from 44¢ to 46¢. Prices for other mailing services — Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services (including Parcel Post), and Extra Services — will most likely change as well. Click here for a small spreadsheet from the USPS with more details on the proposed increases.

Customers can use their Forever Stamps — regardless of when purchased — to mail 1-ounce letters after the price change, without the need for additional postage. Forever Stamps are widely available through Post Offices, commercial retail outlets such as grocery stores, and online.

Prices for mailing services will continue to adjust each January and/or May. Prices for most shipping services, including Express Mail and Priority Mail, were last adjusted January 2010, and the first class postage was last adjusted in May 2009.
